Glenn and I debate this almost every day during the holidays. It’s time to call a truce. The first shot was fired a few years ago by people thinking that those of us that say “Merry Christmas” don’t care about other holidays and religions during this time of year. Not all of us feel that way. If somebody says “Happy Chanuka” to me, I have no problem saying it back. Just like I expect a “Merry Christmas” when I greet someone that way. It’s not so hard to respect others beliefs if there is a respect for mine. Enough with the “Happy Holidays” stuff. We might as well say “Happy Grey Area”.

Let’s relax people.

The man hasn’t done anything yet. All he’s done is charm the pants off the country with talk of change. Let’s give him a chance to come through or screwup before we freak out. Also Obama supporters….notice how I said he hasn’t done anything yet. Stop acting like he’s the greatest president ever without him getting some of his promises in motion. It’s like when the Jets got Brett Favre. Let him win a Super Bowl first then tell us what a great Jet Quarterback he is.

I want the Rays to take on the Dodgers in the World Series in the worst way. The main reason is Hank Steinbrenner annoys me to no end. Hopefully in 2009 he learns to keep his big mouth shut until he has something more boss like to say. It seems the apple has fallen way far from the tree. George would never blame the injury to Wang on National League rules (pitchers running the bases) or hint that the Dodgers and Joe Torre are in the playoffs because they are in an easier league. I want the World Series to go 7 games so all Tampa’s home games are played in the Steinbrenners back yard. A World Series involving Don Zimmer (Tampa) and the outcasts in LA (Torre, Mattingly and Bowa teamed with Manny) a Yankee upper management worst nightmare. Maybe Hank and Hal will think about who they get rid of and what they say from now on.

She is in such demand according to an international poll that she has blown Pamela Anderson out of the water by 61% of the votes. If McCain wins the White House, we could use Palin as a pin up girl for foreign leaders. What better way to say, “let’s work together” then with a visit from our sexy second in command.

Think of the possibilities….Sarah Palin in a french maid outfit, Sarah Palin as a school girl, Sarah Palin as a sexy cop. We’ll form many allies and repaired relationships with this plan….WOOT!

In my opinion the follwing players need to go…
1. Robinson Cano (they should put him in a package with Kennedy or Hughes for an ace)
5. Hideki Matsui (getting old an injury prone)

Ultimately I think the Yankees shouldobviously try for free agent CC Sabathia, but how about putting a package together of Hughes, Kennedy and Cano for Roy Halladay? He’s the biggest workhorse in the game and AL East tested. Its not impossible either. Don’t forget the Yanks got Cone and Clemens from the Blue Jays in the 90’s. I wouldn’t mind seeing Pettitte and Mussina back and keep Joba in the bullpen. My wish list staff would be….Halladay (trade), Sabathia (free agent), Wang, Pettitte and Mussina. That staff would be good for 70 wins just like the staffs from the 90’s.

I have to say yes, I know it’s foolish to count them out in the middle of August. They are in fact chasing a young inexperienced team in the Rays and a Red Sox team that isn’t as dangerous without Manny being Manny …The last time the team I live and die for missed the playoffs was 1993 and they should never be counted out with a 200 million dollar payroll and a handfull of future hall of famers (Jeter, ARod, Rivera), The problem with the 2008 version of the Yankees is not their lack of All Stars and stat compilers. It’s their lack of fundamental baseball. To be more specific…pitching, defense, hitting with runners in scoring position and in the clutch. ARod hitting a 3 run homerun with a 9-3 lead doesn’t win championships. How about a go ahead single with two outs in the 8th to win a big game against the Angels? I’m not going to second guess Joe Girardi either, I don’t think the great Joe Torre could get these unfocused, lazy bombers to play better baseball if he were still here. This is a team that has played 8 days of great baseball and given New York over 100 days of sleep walking in mediocrity. I hope I’m wrong and we see a playoff game in the last year at Yankee Stadium instead of the last home game being at the end of September against the Orioles. That’s no way to send baseball’s cathedral to the scrap yard. When the Yankees fall short this season, they should raid the Angels front office and take back the “how to build a winning baseball team” directions Anaheim copied from the great 90’s Yankees.

Did anyone catch the pregame ceremony at Yankee stadium before the All Star Game? I thought it was well done by FOX. There were a couple cheesy moments like Ernie Banks and George Brett clearly giving fake pep talks to the teams. I think the highlight of the ceremony was George Steinbrenner being driven out on a golf cart to meet the Yankee hall of famers for the cermonial first pitch. The Boss doesn’t put himself in the spotlight much anymore. Now I see why. As much as I’ve heard the stories, I wasn’t expecting to see the old emotional version of King George. When I think of George Steinbrenner, I remember the man from the 70’s and 80’s you love to hate and love to love at the same time. The man who turned a 10 million dollar purchase into a billion dollar empire, the man who cares about Yankee fans and Yankee tradition and winning. The old lion is out to pasture now I think it’s official. Let’s hope Hank and Hal combined can be half the owner that their dad was.
