Babysitting Notes: How Much Is Too Much?

December 3rd, 2009

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Okay…I’m guilty. I’m a first time parent. It’s all still relatively new even though my daughter is about to be 2 years old. As much as I love and trust my parents, my wife and I are aware of little changes in our child’s behavior that we think they should be aware of when they babysit. They are not huge, life-changing things, but are still helpful to know when you don’t understand what she is asking for. I thought it would be helpful if I described these things in an email. After writing the email I figured Cande would get a kick out of it. Little did I know she was not a fan of the email. This sparked some great chatter and your phone calls. Check it all out below, and you’ll see a copy of the email so you can read along while you listen. Enjoy, and we’d love to hear YOUR feedback!

For when you babysit:

* She now likes to sit in a kitchen chair. Not just any chair. The one that daddy likes by the dog crate. Both seat cushions on top of each other to give her height. She’ll eat in it. You put her food on a plate and she loves it.

* No more binky! It is only a treat for bedtime and she knows this. She hasn’t had a binky during the day for this whole week. We just tell her that she’ll get them back at bedtime or naptime when she wakes up in the crib with them. We take them away right away before we even get her out of the crib. Then we place them in her cabinet of food next to the microwave so she can’t see them.

* If she starts saying something that sounds like “Boon” she means spoon. Get her a spoon out of the drawer. It can be a big persons spoon, doesn’t matter. She loves having one when she eats.

* If she points or bangs on our bedroom door and says what sounds like “dress” it’s because she likes walking into our closet and looking at my shirts hanging on the hangers and she calls them a dress. Sometimes we’ll give her one to walk around the house with.

* If she says “Go-Go” or “Mice” she wants to watch Diego or Mickey Mouse on our DVR. You turn on our TV, hit the DRV button, and find a recorded copy of either one. We have many.

We All Do It

December 2nd, 2009

It’s the weekend.  You are lazy.  Not much going on.  It could be early in the morning.  Maybe it’s mid-afternoon.  It may even be the evening and you are bored.  We surf those movie channels.  It may be HBO and Showtime, or TBS and AMC.  We are trying to find something to watch.  Then all of a sudden you see it.  A movie is on that you’ve seen 20 times and you can’t wait to watch it again.  It may be a comedy, drama, or even an animated film, but either way you are so excited that this film is on.  That was our topic the other day and below are the responses.  We had tons of callers discussing their favorites while Cande and I gave ours as well.  Enjoy and we’d love to hear from you.  Make sure you comment about your favorite movies to watch over and over and over again!

What If…

November 16th, 2009

Is it me? Am I the crazy one? Sometimes I think too much and get too deep for my own good. I’m quite the philosophical fellow you know. Thoughts creep into my brain and I have a hard time getting them to leave. Take the other night for instance. My wife and I were lying in bed and watching TV. The show was very disturbing(I wish I could remember what we were watching, but trust me it was disturbing). We started talking about life and what if’s. Honestly, the best way to give you the details is to have you listen to Cande and I talk about it. Check out the audio below and leave your comments. You can’t tell me that you’ve never thought of this stuff!

Trick or Treat

October 27th, 2009

Halloween is here.  A joyous time for many.  For others, not so much.  In this highlight from the show you will get many great insights into my upbringing.  I’m telling you it’s not pretty, but it got the job done.  I mean…look at me.  You don’t turn out better than this!  Enjoy the chat and the phone calls we received.  Leave your comments below as well and we’ll read some on the air.

A Real Intern Program

October 15th, 2009

Hey, finally something on my blog that is educational. Intern programs have gotten quite a bit of flack in the last few weeks thanks to David Letterman. I’m here to tell you that not all are like that. Here at the Long Island Radio Group we actually teach students real, hands on, useful things that they will need for a career in radio. Then, every so often, an intern comes along with a message, a project, something that means alot to them. I love when we can help with that and bring out some good that these students bring to our workplace. Here’s an example. Ali Malito is a bright young intern here that has alot to say and a bright future ahead of her. This is one of our shining examples of education. As a matter of fact she is involved in a project and movement to educate the world. She asked if I would post her message on my blog and it took me about a half a second to say yes. Check out Ali’s message below and join the fight in educating the world!

Hey Phathead Fans,

There’s a pretty important issue that is currently going on in other countries outside of our own, and that’s global education.

According to sources such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, one out of every five children in developing countries between the ages of 6-11 are not in school, seventy percent of which are females. Along with shocking facts as those, 226 million children do not attend high school. Read the rest of this entry »

I Have Seen The Future… And Her Name Is Mila Kunis

October 8th, 2009

So this may not be news to many of you. Mila Kunis has been the voice of Meg on Family Guy for years. Mila Kunis was a star on That 70’s Show for years. However, I was just introduced to her yesterday afternoon. The audio from our show this morning will tell you all about it, but I must say that I have an eye for talent. 1 minute into seeing her on screen I said to myself…”Self, who is this girl, and why don’t I know her already?” A little research later revealed the facts above. Then I went to IMDB.com, one of the greatest websites of all time. In 2010 Mila Kunis has 3 movies coming out. One where she stars with Denzel, the other with Mark Wahlberg, and a third with Natalie Portman. If you don’t know her already, you will 1 year from now! Listen below and you’ll hear exactly how my lazy afternoon went yesterday!

My Day

October 7th, 2009

Yeah…it’s an easy job. Talk for a few hours and go home. Sure. Well it’s not that simple. Sometimes just the smallest thing in the morning will throw my karma and day off. How about when big things go wrong like this morning. Forget about it. With a 3:30am wakeup nothing is easy! Check out all the things that went wrong today.

Peas and Jelly

September 14th, 2009

That has to be the most misunderstood title of all the blogs, but here goes:

What you are about to hear is both funny and important.  First, who knew my parents were hip.  Yes, they have their issues like we all do, but they are hip.  I found out first hand last Thursday night.  Listen to see why.

Then we get to a back to school story that all parents need to hear.  It involves those colorful jelly bracelets that alot of the kids wear.  This is the first I’m hearing of this, however Cande seems to have known about it for awhile.  In my defense, Cande has one son in high school and another in college.  She says she has known the meaning of the bracelets for quite some time.  It’s a must listen for all parents.  Enjoy and we welcome your comments as always.

Update

September 1st, 2009

This whole thing about Cande’s son going to college is giving me something to look forward to every day. It’s quite the dynamic…me raising a toddler, Cande sending her first son off to college. So many great stories already and it’s only been one day! The girlfriend visited him already. Man oh man I need to get some cameras and shoot a reality show. Check out the following and enjoy!

Cande and I are getting old!

August 31st, 2009

What a weekend.  Cande drops her 18 year old son off at college.  I go to a concert and leave before the main act takes the stage.  Is that a sign that I should hang it up, retire, re-evaluate my life????  It was emotional for Cande and fun for me regarding her son.  While she feels like she is losing a child, I feel like I am gaining great stuff to talk about on the show.  His keg parties, phone calls home, new girlfriends.  It’s going to be great.  As for my concert experience…I admit it…I wouldn’t have done this ten years ago.  Listen to all of the action and let us know what you think.  We’ll read some on the air!  Enjoy!
